Andrea Weiss, Director

Andrea Weiss is an internationally acclaimed documentary filmmaker and nonfiction author. Her books include Paris Was A Woman (Harper Collins, 1995), Vampires And Violets (Penguin, 1993), and, most recently, In The Shadow Of The Magic Mountain: The Erika And Klaus Mann Story (University of Chicago Press, 2008). They have been translated into French, German, Korean, Swedish, Japanese, and Croatian.
Andrea’s newest film, U.N. Fever, an observational documentary following three teams of college students who compete in the international Model U.N. conference, was released in 2008. She is the co-writer/director of Escape To Life, a feature documentary about the lives of Erika and Klaus Mann which premiered in the 2001 Rotterdam and Berlin Film Festivals followed by a wide European theatrical and television release. Her previous film credits include Recall Florida, I Live At Ground Zero, Seed Of Sarah, Paris Was A Woman, A Bit Of Scarlet, Before Stonewall, International Sweethearts Of Rhythm, (for which she won an Emmy Award) and Tiny & Ruby: Hell Divin’ Women. Her company, Jezebel Productions, was recently honored with retrospective screenings in Hamburg and Berlin.
Andrea has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, and New York Foundation for the Arts. She was Artist-in-Residence at the Banff Center for the Arts in Canada, the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida, and the D.A.A.D. Artist Program in Berlin. She has taught at the International Film and Photo Workshops in Rockport, Maine, New York University, and the National Film and Television School of Great Britain. She holds a Ph.D. in History and currently is Professor of Film/Video and Chair of the Department of Media and Communication Arts at the City College of New York.
